ARTIST STATEMENT

I closely align my current artwork with my own perceptions of the human figure, including the unique physical characteristics in which individual bodies hold in relation to surrounding spaces. Additionally, I intend to capture fleeting moments through the act of painting. My current body of work focuses on vulnerability within the human physical body and mind, and emphasizes certain detailed areas of the subject; meanwhile other areas are blurred out and abstracted to evoke an uncertainty within the surrounding space. I intend for these works to communicate a relationship between the subject of the body and the body’s surrounding space.

Through both representation and abstraction, I bring attention to each specific figure in the painting, while questioning the body’s connection to a sense of place. I am particularly interested in extremely unique physical qualities in an individual that tend to be more vulnerable, such as the collarbone, or neck. In order to capture these features in detail, my sincere attention is directed towards the figures. My chief medium of oil paint allows me to create a relationship between the subject and an abstract surrounding space, and allows for a realistic richness of color. In my ongoing series, I also evoke vulnerability through the application of textured paint strokes and blending. My paintings come from a place of intimacy, in which I photograph affection, either among people or of oneself. Remembering specific details of these quick moments that I capture is difficult; however, the intimacy and affection in my memories will remain soft and enduring. Through my paintings, I hope that viewers can also reflect upon their own personal interactions and relationships.
